Unique Umali (interview) – The Man Behind “They Call me Pacman” Song
We’ve got the chance to interview the man behind the They call me pacman song.
A very interesting piece of composition made by Unique Umali which is beginning to create a buzz around the net.
This song really fits pacman’s personality and has a very big potential to be use, as pacman’s entrance music on the upcoming pacquiao-hatton match on may 2.
All we have to do is to spread the word, and let the pacman team know about this, so we can make it happen.

Meanwhile, here’s the actual interview of aprub.com with Unique Umali :
aprub: who is unique umali?
unique umali: Im Unique Umali, im a music producer, song writer, recording artist and sound engineer. Im from the UK but currently live here sa Pilipinas
aprub: when did you start writing songs?
unique umali:We’ll i’ve been “rapping or writing rhymes” since the age of 14 as this is the age where i fell in love with hiphop. As for song writing well, that began when i started producing songs around the age of 16. Nobody taught me as such, I just listened to the greats to find create my own style of production.
aprub: where do you record your songs ( studio or at home ) ?
unique umali: I record music where ever i am haha on the road, different studios but a majority of my material is record at my studio here in Batangas
aprub: can you tell us about your musical influences
unique umali:Wow, there’s sooooo many. Ummm well being mixed race enabled me to have in site into different music from both eastern and western sides of my parents.
On the one hand, i grew up listening to kundiman classics from Ruben Tagalog to Nora Anor and on the Other hand, i grew up listening to the political views
of Bob Marley, the meaning of true song writing from Marvin Gaye and the production genius of Phil Collins.
When i started making money from paper rounds to buy cassette tapes and recording jams off the radio, i started getting into rap. My influences there where Ice-T, 2pac, Cypress Hill, Warren g, Ice Cube and NWA.
Who influenced me to make music were great producers such as Johnny Jackson (RIP), Dr.Dre, Daz Dillinger, Warren G, Timbaland, Quincy Jones
aprub: would you sign a record contract with a major label?
unique umali: If the price was right, yes i would but in this day and age of digital music, record labels are becoming more and more extinct as independent artists/producers can sell themselves and keep 100% of their sales, which is why i say the price has to be right ;)
aprub: we know that aside from creating your own songs, you also have your own music company, can you tell us more about it?
That’s correct, i have a music production company Hot Property Music Group which was founded in 2001 by myself and my music partner Chiller Scheme. With my songs and his combined, we have over 15,000 compositions in the vault to date.
Hot Property Music Group is a universal production team which is made up of 2 music producers (Myself and Chiller) and over 10 song writers located around the world for different ideas from different cultures.
aprub: how, do you think, does the internet (mp3, youtube etc. ) change the music industry?
unique umali:Like i said earlier, the use of the net has made things very hard for record labels and easier for the independent artist. Where anybody can be who they want to be, as long as they put the work in. Youtube, myspace and so on are good for exposure for audiences which are not in ones reach. My biggest fan base is from the US and Japan and i have never even visited those countries!! However, old skool methods of “hustling” your music is still valid eg. Handing out CD’s at clubs, Selling CD’s from the trunk of your car, having a street team to promote your music… etc
aprub: even before doing the “they call me pacman” song…
are you a manny pacquiao fan to begin with?
unique umali: BIG FAN he’s like the Pinoy Muhammad Ali. Black People got Muhammad Ali, The Chinese got Bruce Lee and we got Pacman. Im very proud of kuya Manny and he is a distinct reminder to us Pinoy’s that you can be whatever you wanna be if you want it hard enough!
aprub: before we end this interview,
any tips you can share with aspiring music artists out there?
unique umali: Just do what you do and follow your instincts. Forget the rest. Try and show people your music that you do not know eg. strangers, friends of friends, people who don’t know you or even DJ’s. This way you will get an honest opinion on your sounds. playing your track to your friends might not give you the real answer. They may say, that’s a HOT track but really only saying it cause they’re your buddy and leads you into a false mindset that your songs are good! Don’t fall into this trap!
Another tip is to listen to whats out now! Whats BIG in the clubs and on the music scene at the moment? Familiarise yourself with the sounds eg. synths, drums, instruments and use them BUT use differently! Be you without being different. If you can, that concept, you have a chance of being successful! Honestly!
aprub: where can we hear more of your songs? do you play live?
unique umali:I currently have an EP album available up for FREE download entitled “The Entity Ep” which can be download here:
